The Complete MOT Checklist, Never Fail Again

Published 15 Mar 2026 • 8 min read

Every year, millions of UK vehicles go through the MOT test. Yet nearly 40% fail on their first attempt, often for simple, avoidable issues. This comprehensive guide will help you prepare your vehicle and pass with confidence.

What is an MOT?

The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual inspection required for vehicles over three years old in the UK. It checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. Driving without a valid MOT can result in fines of up to £1,000.

Pre-MOT Checklist

Before taking your vehicle to the garage, run through these checks yourself:

1. Lights and Indicators

Check all external lights: headlights (main and dipped beam), brake lights, indicators, fog lights, reversing lights, and number plate lights. This is one of the most common failure points, and it's often just a blown bulb that costs pennies to replace.

2. Tyres

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Check all four tyres plus the spare. Look for cuts, bulges, or uneven wear. Also check that tyre pressures are correct, underinflated tyres can affect handling and fuel economy.

3. Windscreen and Wipers

Your windscreen must be free from significant chips or cracks, especially in the driver's line of vision. Wiper blades should clear the screen effectively without smearing. Top up your washer fluid, an empty washer bottle is an instant fail.

4. Brakes

While a full brake inspection requires specialist equipment, you can check for warning signs: unusual noises, the car pulling to one side, or a spongy brake pedal. Make sure the handbrake holds the car on a slope.

5. Exhaust and Emissions

Excessive smoke from the exhaust is a fail. If your engine warning light is on, get it checked before the MOT as it often relates to emissions. A faulty catalytic converter is an expensive repair but common failure point.

6. Mirrors and Glass

All mirrors must be present, securely attached, and provide a clear view behind. Side windows must open and close properly. Tinted windows must allow at least 70% light transmission on front windows.

7. Seatbelts

Check that all seatbelts extend, retract, and lock properly. Look for fraying or damage to the webbing. All seatbelt mounting points should be secure.

8. Horn

Your horn must produce a continuous, uniform sound. It's a simple check but worth doing.

Common MOT Failure Points

According to DVSA data, the most common reasons for MOT failure are:

  • Lighting and signalling (30% of failures)
  • Suspension (13%)
  • Brakes (10%)
  • Tyres (9%)
  • Driver's view of the road (8%)
  • Exhaust, fuel, and emissions (7%)
