Essential Car Buying Checklist for UK Buyers

Published 8 Mar 2026 • 10 min read

Buying a used car in the UK can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. With over 7 million used car transactions every year, it's crucial to know what to look for. This comprehensive checklist will help you avoid the most common pitfalls.

Before You Visit

1. Research the Model

Know the typical price range for the car you're interested in. Check multiple sources like Auto Trader, Parkers, and What Car?. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, they usually are.

2. Check the Vehicle History

Before arranging a viewing, run an HPI check. This will reveal if the car has been stolen, written off, has outstanding finance, or has had its mileage tampered with. It's a small investment that can save you thousands.

3. Check MOT History Online

The DVLA provides free MOT history for any vehicle. Look for patterns, recurring failures might indicate ongoing problems. Check the mileage at each MOT to verify it matches the odometer reading.

4. Inspect the Exterior

Walk around the car looking for rust, dents, mismatched paint, and panel gaps. Uneven gaps between panels can indicate previous accident damage. Check the tyres for even wear, uneven wear suggests alignment or suspension issues.

5. Check Under the Bonnet

Look for oil leaks, corroded battery terminals, and worn belts. The oil should be a clear amber colour on the dipstick, not black and gritty. Check the coolant level and look for any milky residue that could indicate a head gasket problem.

6. Interior Inspection

Check all electrical systems: windows, mirrors, air conditioning, infotainment, heated seats. Look for wear on the driver's seat and pedal rubbers, excessive wear on a low-mileage car is a red flag.

7. Test Drive

Drive the car for at least 20 minutes on a variety of roads. Listen for unusual noises from the engine, gearbox, and suspension. Check that all gears engage smoothly and the brakes feel firm and even.

Documents to Verify

  • V5C registration document, check the seller's name and address match
  • Full service history with stamps or receipts
  • MOT certificates
  • Warranty documents if applicable
  • Finance settlement letter (if previously on finance)

Red Flags

  • Seller won't let you get an independent inspection
  • Pressure to decide quickly
  • Cash-only transactions
  • Meeting in a public car park (not at their home address)
  • V5C not in the seller's name
  • Mileage discrepancies between MOTs
