UK Clean Air Zones · May 2026

UK clean air zones, in plain English.

Eight live zones. Different rules. We checked them all so you don't have to.

The UK has eight live clean air zones. London has two: ULEZ across all 32 boroughs and the Congestion Charge in the centre. Glasgow runs a low emission zone that bans non-compliant vehicles outright. Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield, Bath and Portsmouth each charge older vehicles a daily fee. Most modern petrol and diesel cars are exempt. Use the postcode lookup below to check yours.

How they work

How clean air zones work

What is a clean air zone?

A defined area where vehicles below a certain emissions standard either pay a daily fee or are not allowed to enter. The aim is to reduce air pollution in city centres.

Which vehicles pay?

Generally, petrol cars older than 2006 and diesel cars older than 2015 don't meet the standard. Most newer cars are exempt. Each zone has its own checker that confirms by registration number.

What happens if you don't pay?

Cameras read your number plate. If your vehicle is non-compliant and you did not pay, you get a Penalty Charge Notice in the post. Most are around £120, doubled if you ignore them.
