Why 6 Million UK Cars Are Driven Without a Valid MOT Every Year, And How to Make Sure Yours Isn't One of Them

Around 6 million vehicles on UK roads are driven without a valid MOT certificate at any given time. That figure, sourced from Kwik Fit and the Department for Transport, doesn't represent 6 million reckless drivers. Most of them simply forgot.

What happens if you're caught

Driving without a valid MOT is a criminal offence under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The penalties are straightforward:

  • A fine of up to £1,000
  • Your vehicle can be seized on the spot by police or flagged by ANPR cameras
  • Your car insurance is almost certainly invalidated, most policies require a valid MOT as a condition of cover

That last point is the one most people miss. If you're involved in an accident while driving without a valid MOT, your insurer can refuse to pay out entirely, even if the accident had nothing to do with your car's condition. A minor bump becomes a five-figure personal liability.

There is no grace period

Your MOT certificate becomes invalid at midnight on the expiry date. There is no buffer, no 14-day extension, no leeway. The only exception is if you are driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment, and that appointment must already be confirmed.

How to check your MOT status right now

The government provides a free checker at check-mot.service.gov.uk. Enter your registration number and you'll see your current MOT expiry date, plus the full test history including advisories and failure points. It takes 30 seconds.

Why reminders fail

The DVSA does send MOT reminders, but only if you've registered for them, and only to the address or phone number on file. If you've moved, changed your number, or simply never registered, you won't receive one. Many drivers assume the DVLA, their insurer, or their garage will remind them. None of them are obligated to.

The responsibility sits entirely with you. And "I forgot" is not a legal defence.

The early testing window

You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same annual renewal date. This means there's no reason to leave it until the last day. Booking early gives you time to fix any advisory issues before the test, and avoids the stress of finding a last-minute slot.

How Revn plugs the gap

When you add your registration to Revn, the app connects to the DVLA and pulls your MOT expiry date automatically. From there, it sends configurable alerts, at 30, 14, and 7 days before expiry, so you have time to book, prepare, and test without panic.

The free Starter plan covers two vehicles. No credit card required.

FAQ

Can I drive with an expired MOT?

Only if you are driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment. Otherwise, it is illegal and you risk a fine of up to £1,000.

Does my insurance cover me if my MOT has expired?

Almost certainly not. Most UK car insurance policies include a valid MOT as a condition. Without one, your insurer can refuse to pay any claim.

How do I check my MOT date for free?

Enter your registration at check-mot.service.gov.uk, or add your vehicle to Revn for automatic tracking and reminders.
