The Ultra Low Emission Zone has been a reality for London drivers since 2019, but since its expansion to cover the entire Greater London area in August 2023, millions more motorists now need to know whether their vehicle is compliant, or whether every trip into the capital is costing them £12.50.
What the ULEZ actually is
The ULEZ is a zone covering all of Greater London where vehicles must meet minimum emission standards. If your car doesn't meet them, you're charged £12.50 per day, every day you drive within the boundary, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
For a daily commuter, that adds up to over £4,500 a year. For someone who drives into London just twice a week, it's still over £1,300 annually. These aren't small numbers, and many drivers are paying them without realising there's a simple way to check.
The emission standards explained
ULEZ compliance is based on your vehicle's Euro emission standard, not its age, though the two are closely related:
- Petrol vehicles need to meet Euro 4, generally those registered from around 2006 onwards
- Diesel vehicles need to meet Euro 6, generally those registered from around September 2015 onwards
- Electric and hydrogen vehicles are automatically compliant
- Motorcycles and mopeds need to meet Euro 3, generally those registered from 2007 onwards
The key word is "generally." There are exceptions in both directions, some cars registered before these dates do comply, and some registered after don't. The only way to be certain is to check your specific vehicle.
It's not just London anymore
While the ULEZ is London-specific, Clean Air Zones (CAZs) are spreading across UK cities:
- Birmingham: Daily charge of £8 for non-compliant cars
- Bath: Charges for commercial vehicles, private cars exempt for now
- Bradford, Bristol, Sheffield: Various CAZ schemes with different rules
- Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford: Planned or in consultation
If you drive between cities regularly, knowing your emission standard isn't optional anymore, it's essential. Our complete guide to ULEZ and Clean Air Zones covers every active and planned zone in detail.
The penalty for getting it wrong
Drive into the ULEZ without paying? You'll receive a Penalty Charge Notice of £180, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days. That's on top of the daily charge you should have paid. ANPR cameras cover every entry point, so there's no slipping through unnoticed.
How to check, and what to do next
TfL offers a free vehicle checker on their website, but it only tells you about London's ULEZ. It doesn't track your status over time, remind you if rules change, or connect to any of your other vehicle information.
Revn pulls your vehicle's emission data directly when you enter your registration, so you can see your ULEZ compliance alongside your MOT date, tax status, insurance renewal, and everything else. One lookup, complete picture.
